That was a great read and very well investigated. It reminds me of the Super Replica, the Fuel Shark or the Pepsi Max articles.

On the other hand... Two Alissa Walker articles in ONE day... :) (by the way, her name... It’s a pseudonym right?)

When Jalopnik does proper longread, investigative articles, they are usually superlative.

reminds me of when effort, not clickbait, was something that was encouraged

And look at the results 120.000 page reads in half a day... Good stuff gets promoted, shared, liked. On the other hand, fill up articles, especially during the week end, barely get any views.

If Jalopnik could keep on pushing original content like this, I’m sure it could easily get back to what it was before. I’m not saying they should stop the repost of whatever video they may like, or do a write up on whatever car they’d want to drive. But orignal articles beats everything.

I’d love to see Raphael, Jason or Doug go to reader’s homes and review whatever car the reader submitted. All that filmed and photographed properly, with a video and a write up. That could be really entertaining and fairly cheap. And most of all, very Jalop!

This is exactly the kind of thing I encourage my writers to go after, and we have more in the works!

Just remember that in addition to the daily slew of shorter and medium length posts we put out to serve you readers, since not everyone wants a novel every day, big enterprise stories like these take a *lot* of time, hard work, and careful vetting. This one had been in the works since early March.

If I could do four or five big investigations a year, I’d be happy. Balancing that with daily coverage is easily our biggest challenge.

Thanks for the nice words. And Alissa was the one who told us to go buy all the French cars , so she’s OK.

Nah man, it’s a trick... She perfectly knows they break down all the time. And we all know cars that are broken down can’t be on the street = more space for WALKERS!

I know that, for a little while before the editorial change, there was a search for a data journalist. Did Jalopnik ever fill that position?

That must have been from before I took over, and it might have been a Gawker-wide job rather than just for us? Either way I’m not familiar with it. The only openings we have are the two writer jobs I’m hopefully in the final stages of getting squared away now.

Cool. Wasn’t trying to get you to lay out staffing/editorial plans, was just curious, since Torch’s piece (and a few other in the past few months) reminded me of all the really good work Jalopnik can do.
